SAFETY and MAINTENANCE SYSTEMS MANAGER
Dave joined the RAAF in 1967 and trained as an Aeronautical Engineer. After serving in various units he was OIC Engine Flight, RAAF School of Technical Training (RAAFSTT), Wagga in 1978.
While at RAAFSTT, as a Flight Lieutenant, he organised the RAAF support team for Ken WARBY which helped him set the current world water speed record of 317 mph or 511 kph at Blowering Dam in October 1978. At this time he also had the privilege (?) of being helping to train fellow current Warby Motorsport team-mates Rob BLACKADDER and Ian FIELD when they trained as Engine Fitter apprentices.
He left the RAAF in February 2000, with the rank of Wing Commander. He now resides in Canberra with his wife, Ro. His other interests include using computers, following most sports (particularly the Australian Rules Football club Collingwood). He has three children and five grandchildren.
WHY IS DAVE INVOLVED IN THIS PROJECT?
Through his continuing friendship with Ken Warby, he now finds himself involved with Spirit of Australia II after being involved with Aussie Spirit. His main involvement revolves around keeping Ken, and now Dave, safe. He does this by liaising with organisations such as the Police, Roads & Maritime Services, SES and the Volunteer Rescue Association to ensure that the appropriate bureaucratic approvals are in place. However his main role is to ensure the appropriate maintenance is carried out and documented before and after each boat run. Hence his place in the team as Project Safety and Maintenance Systems Manager.
